Mas Comtal,
a Historical Legacy
We are Albert and Marta, father and daughter, leading this adventure of winemaking. We are a family with a long winemaking tradition, located in the heart of Penedès, who have dedicated ourselves mainly to viticulture since time immemorial.
Mas Comtal has belonged to the family since 1355, and since then, we have gone through different stages shaped by the times. However, it was with the 1993 harvest, driven by the desire to see our effort and well-done work as winegrowers dignified, that we put the old winery back into operation, producing high-quality, organic wines with their own style. With our wines, we want to bring light and joy to the lives of people like you. With your support, we can contribute to maintaining the rural economy of our country and to valuing our landscape, cultural, historical, and gastronomic heritage.
HISTORY AND ORIGINS
Farming, a
way to life
Our connection to the land is unquestionable. Centuries of dedication and ties to agriculture and the territory. We love our work, we love the land, we love Penedès and the cultural legacy our ancestors left us.
However, it was with the 1993 harvest that Joan and Albert Milà, the two brothers, with the desire to preserve the family legacy, made a 180-degree turn in the family project. Their aim was to produce genuine wines that pursued excellence. Joan, as a prestigious enologist, and Albert, as a great viticulture expert, soon saw their efforts recognized, becoming a benchmark winery in Penedès.
Many milestones have been achieved by both of them, but unfortunately, Joan passed away in January 2010. His disciple, Miquel Medall, takes over as oenologist and, faithful to his legacy, continues to work with rigor, innovation, and singularity.
Our history
Some important dates that explain our journey
About 2000 years ago, the Romans built a Mutatio on the same spot where the farmhouse stands today. It was a travelers’ resting place. An arch from that era remains as a testament at the current entrance.
The building passed into the hands of Count Sunyer, giving rise to the current name of the farmhouse: Mas Comtal
Date of the first preserved documents related to the family as inhabitants of the farmhouse.
Wine production at the winery itself, which was sold in bulk, ceased. The focus shifted to the COVIDES cooperative; my grandfather, Josep Milà Ivern, was one of its founders.
My father, Albert Milà Mallofré, deregistered from the COVIDES cooperative. Grapes continued to be sold to other sparkling wine producers.
The planting of new varieties began, which would later allow us to start a new phase with the production of quality still white, rosé, and red wines.
With this year’s harvest, my father Albert, along with my uncle Joan as oenologist, began a new phase with the bottling of quality wines.
Already practicing organic farming, we registered with the CCPAE to certify our wines as organic.
We deregistered as CAVA producers and began a new phase with the production of sparkling wines certified by the Penedès Designation of Origin itself. We planted the seed for what later became the new project for quality sparkling wines from Penedès: Clàssic Penedès.
In January 2010, Joan Milà, Albert‘s brother, who had been the winery’s oenologist until then, passed away. Without him, the success of Mas Comtal cannot be fully explained. In his place, his disciple, Miquel Medall Prades, our current oenologist, joined our project.
The first bottles of the GRAN ANGULAR project, our most creative line, were released. These unique wines allow us to experiment, research, and apply our knowledge without the commitment of continuity.
A new stage began with the introduction of local varieties that would complement Xarel·lo. These are Garnacha, Sumoll, and Malvasia de Sitges.
We produced the first wine exclusively with indigenous yeast.
We produced the first wines without added sulfites. A new challenge.
We produced the first ancestral wine.
Our Garden
is the Vineyards
It’s 40 hectares of vineyards, located on the north side of the farmhouse, at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level. They are protected from the cold northern winds by the beautiful Montserrat massif and caressed by the Mediterranean breeze. These are optimal conditions for making wines that will make you fall in love. We currently have 10 different grape varieties planted, allowing for variety and singularity.
Xarel·lo, Malvasia de Sitges, and Garnatxa Negra are the most emblematic varieties of the area, bringing us Mediterranean character and childhood memories. Antistiana Xarel·lo is a clear example of this. The remaining varieties are international, gracing us with excellence, originality, and personality. You absolutely must try the Antistiana made with Incrocio Manzoni or the Petrea Chardonnay, two of our most treasured gems.
RESPECTFUL VITICULTURE
We cultivate our vineyards
with respect
We cultivate our vineyards in coherence with our values of quality and responsibility. The low grape production per vine ensures good ripening and the balance that will be reflected in elegant, harmonious, and age-worthy wines. We are aware that now, more than ever, the value of quality is linked to the practice of respectful agriculture that promotes biodiversity. We have returned to our origins by practicing viticulture free of herbicides and systemic fungicides.
We completely avoid the use of insecticides with sexual confusion techniques. For the fertilization of the fields, we use organic fertilizers of animal and vegetable origin, and pruning waste is reincorporated into the soil for decomposition; by avoiding burning, the CO2 generated in combustion is reduced. Our commitment is to work responsibly and sustainably throughout the entire production cycle. Therefore, since 2001, we have had CCPAE certification for both the vineyard and the wine production process.
Mas Comtal
winery
In the winery, the magic of grape-to-wine transformation takes place. We all know it’s like cooking: the key to success lies in the quality of the ingredients and their interpretation. Variety by variety, vineyard by vineyard, we work individually, thinking about the future wine, which, like the best chef, we will “cook” in the same “kitchen” to serve, delight, satisfy, and surprise the most demanding gourmets.
We love to innovate, improve, try, and experiment. One of the most exciting aspects of the wine world is the entire process of creation and evolution of any wine born in our winery. Because no two wines are alike. A wine is like a child; it’s gratifying to see it born, grow, and mature. And it’s especially comforting when you can share it, creating great moments that no one can take away from you.
Experimentation and research go hand-in-hand with environmental awareness and the authenticity of our wines. We work every day to make the entire process of creation, packaging, and transport more sustainable. Reducing plastic and our carbon footprint throughout the process are significant challenges. We are learning to implement the exclusive use of indigenous yeasts and to notably reduce the use of sulfites as a food preservative, all to offer you more genuine wines that express the singularity of our landscape.
This is our
human team
The work at Mas Comtal is complex. So the family goes far beyond my father and myself; we’re a small but mighty team where versatility and commitment play an important role. Without our team, nothing would be possible. They make everything work and ensure an exciting future is possible. Each person, from their own perspective and in their own area, is key to making the dream of creating great wines a reality. We thank them all for the generosity and support that make it possible for our great wines to reach your tables.
Albert Milà Mallofré
XV Generation - The Voice of Experience
Passionate about his work and committed to the family legacy, he has farming in his blood. He had the courage to begin a new stage by producing and bottling quality wines at the age of 50. It’s never too late to reinvent oneself. Surely, it was the only way to make the family estate an exciting and dignified way of life. This, however, does not diminish his merit. A dream come true.
Marta Milà Ràfols
XVI Generation - The Gear
By chance or not, my father launched this new project coinciding with a period of important decision-making for me. I was finishing my more general studies and needed to start more specific training. The launch of this new adventure excited me, and I enrolled in the Mercè Rossell School of Viticulture and Oenology, where my uncle taught oenology classes. Since then, I haven’t strayed from this fascinating world.
Although I dedicate a lot of my time to administrative and management tasks, among many others, what I enjoy most is proudly sharing our wines with people, especially visitors.

nothing would be possible“
